Food Inc.

"Food, Inc.", a movie that I highly recommend to watch before writing our final essay. I believe it will help you come out some ideas about our nation's food industry, it does work for me. I have found the trailer video and even the whole movie from YouTube, which I linked below. Try it out!!

The trailer video:

The part 1 of the movie:

There are all parts from the suggestion column next to the video. (from YouTube web page)

The current method of raw food production is largely a response to the growth of the fast food industry since the 1950s. The production of food overall has more drastically changed since that time than the several thousand years prior. Controlled primarily by a handful of multinational corporations, the global food production business - with an emphasis on the business - has as its unwritten goals production of large quantities of food at low direct inputs (most often subsidized) resulting in enormous profits, which in turn results in greater control of the global supply of food sources within these few companies. Health and safety (of the food itself, of the animals produced themselves, of the workers on the assembly lines, and of the consumers actually eating the food) are often overlooked by the companies, and are often overlooked by government in an effort to provide cheap food regardless of these negative consequences. Many of the changes are based on advancements in science and technology, but often have negative side effects. The answer that the companies have come up with is to throw more science at the problems to bandage the issues but not the root causes. The global food supply may be in crisis with lack of biodiversity, but can be changed on the demand side of the equation.

Letter from Birmingham Jail

"Letter from Birmingham Jail" is written by Martin Luther King Jr. When all of the arguments King puts forth in both works have the ability to appeal to everyone in some way, the manner in which he shifts his tone and rhetoric many times throughout each text in order to address a specific audience is what makes these documents so power. Since so many of King's arguments are based on emotion and appeal to tradition and culture, it is most useful to look at the ways he uses rhetoric to appeal to certain subsets of his audience. King's letter actually addresses two audiences; the limited and precisely defined group of eight clergymen and a broader and less exactly defined group of intelligent and religious moderates. He uses rhetorical strategies and language that invokes a sense of these men's hypocrisy and once he accomplishes this, the argument for the protests broadens out and his tone shifts and begins to include the larger, presumably agreeing audience. King wrote this letter to the eight clergymen because these men clearly disagree with him and his notion of civil rights and peaceful protest. Therefore, King puts his argument on the same religious and academic level as these eight men claimed to be at, there would be no possibility of refutation since if they were to do so.

Final Thoughts on Information Technology

After the readings and class discussions, I still stand for that the Internet is creating an environment of misinformation. Because the most I heard and read is that the Internet technology makes people lazy on using hard copies such as books, dictionaries in printed form, papers, etc. They usually use Internet network to find information all the time, but is their information credible from the editors on the Internet? I think it depends on your own thought. If there is a misinformation appeared, people will pass that misinformation through one to another one.

More, let watch what this high school senior student says about the positive impacts of technology from the below YouTube video.

http://youtu.be/fx1cQX09wCY

I totally agree with her opinions about the advantages of technology on education, it includes the information technology, Wikipedia. But these advantages also make many negative impacts as my argument of my essay #2.

Information Technology

Information technology becomes more important in the field of business and education. Have you ever considered what our society would be like without the assistance of information technology? If we go back one hundred years, would we be able to survive without computers? Computers consist of Internet technology and information technology. How could the information technology affect on our society? These static plastics have made such a tremendous impact on our daily lives that trepidation overtakes us at the only thought of not having them.

How information technology has given independence and self-esteem to the elderly and the physically challenged. Active parents do not have to go off to college and leave kids with auntie or grandma. Information technology now allows them the ability to enjoy it all; continue earning their weekly/ monthly salary, play their roles within the family, and earn their degrees as the kids drift off to sleep. Some individuals take it a step further by searching for jobs and eventually working at home with the help of these stationary devices.

Other, information technology has allowed law enforcements to minimize, solve, and even prevent crimes. Many rental companies, for example, have tracking devices on their vehicles that, with the help of computers, can detect their exact whereabouts if they are stolen. Missing or wanted individuals can also be tracked similarly, once they are on the phone for at least a few seconds. Detectives present the dead by revealing how, when, where, and by whom their lives were taken. A fingerprint or a strand of hair could be all it takes to make the dead speak and put a criminal behind bars. This information technology will be a Smartphone or Iphone which affects that many things on our society.

Google

Google, an information technology, is the No.1 searching website in the world. If anyone has a question, people usually just type it in words on the Google searching bar of the website. Google will give you the answers by using links and sitemaps to other websites where you can find information you need. Is it that easy and useful? This search engine can find some of the most obscure information and include it in the index. Since it becomes popular, people usually say "starts google it online". "Google" exactly means to search from these people's habit, it shows how successful Google website is. This type of deep search technology has some advantages and disadvantages.

The inner web pages consist of Google's pages that take several clicks before the user is able to view them. These pages may be product pages, content or a database of searches that web search engine spiders cannot normally crawl. The advantage of this type of crawl technology is that website owners can have products, shops, information and other valuable links included in a web search engine's index. This leaves more visibility on the Internet for the website owner.

But this deep search engine, Google, has one disadvantage that personal information being indexed regardless of privacy. Information such as social security numbers, financial information or geographic locations can be indexed even if it's posted to a personal website. Google has given users the ability to block some information from the index using a file. It allows users to remove URLs after the website owner has removed the offending information, which deletes it from the index. Further, this information technology also affects on traditional institutions negatively such as libraries and books. For example, when college students need information for doing their research papers, they usually find it on the Internet using this information technology. Because it's more convenient that they only have to type the keywords on the searching bar, they don't have to find on books in hard copies which they need to go to libraries. Then, people will start ignoring books and libraries because they don't need to go at all. People are becoming lazy through this information technology, Google.

The Role of Journalism

In a free society, journalists should seek to represent the opinions of the people in writing stories that reflect every aspect of an issue in the most truthfully representative way possible. The most meaningful information of an affair is the most important goal but as human beings, journalists can never be completely objective. Virtually all articles have at least the subtlest shade of opinion. But an article doesn't necessarily have to be totally non-biased in order to be useful to the reader. The journalist's opinions do not seriously obscure the facts of a story, the reader should even consider a degree of subjectivity as a strength that he can choose to accept or debate in an article in such as newspapers or magazines. A well balanced newspaper or magazine will present as many perspectives as possible without advocating any particular one. In showing the various ideas people involved in an affair have about a topic, the reader can form the opinions that he believes best suit his personality, mentality, and lifestyle. In conclusion, the editorials in a newspaper or magazine are not really credible at all.

Technology in General: Facebook

Facebook is one of the popular social networking websites cover around the entire world, especially for teenagers or young adults, like me. This is one of the social methods that people can keep in contact easily through internet network (on air) with their friends, family members, relatives, or even boyfriend. It is a communication bridge for people keep or build up their relationship. For today's college students, Facebook has become as commonplace as school sweatshirts and dreary cafeteria food. But is Facebook good for college students? I believe Facebook is good for college students. It is a fantastic social networking tool, and can be used to help students communicate with each other about all kinds of things. Fall asleep in class and need someone's notes? Looking for a tutor or a study partner? Need a ride home for the weekend after hanging out? Wondering where the party is? Moreover, since many professors are on Facebook too, this may be a good place to ask a quick question about an assignment. Since many college students are away from home, another advantage of Facebook is that it gives students the opportunity to stay in touch. Students who are homesick can keep in touch with family members and friends back home, and students who are in long distance relationships can have an easier time feeling connected. For many students, Facebook is a valuable social networking tool. But it also truly does serve as a distraction that makes it hard to study. At any rate, Facebook has greatly changed how students interact on college campuses in a very short period of time, and until something else comes along, it appears to be here to stay. This amazing technology is moving us in positive direction for many students, but not all.

The Role of Education

Education is very important for an individual's success in life. Education provides pupils teaching skills that prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the world of work in later life. Education is generally seen as the foundation of society which brings economic wealth, social prosperity and political stability. Higher education helps in maintaining a healthy society which prepares health care professionals, educated health care consumers and maintaining healthy population. Education is major aspect of development of any modern society since if there is a deficit of educated people, then society will stops its further progress. Government should pay serious attention to education and support it economically and morally all over the country.

Educated individuals enjoy respect among their colleagues and they can effectively contribute to the development of their country and society by inventing new devices and discoveries. Today's ever growing numbers of people mostly are not satisfied with their basic education and try to get secondary or tertiary education in order to meet the demands of contemporary society. Some of them enter higher educational institutions and some search additional information on the internet. Good People sacrifices their time and money and sometimes even their health to raise educational level because they realize that education is their passport to the future and for tomorrow.
Main purpose of education is to educate individuals within society, to prepare and qualify them for work in economy as well as to integrate people into society and teach them values and morals of society. Role of education is means of socializing individuals and to keep society smoothing and remain stable. Education in society prepares youngsters for adulthood so that they may form the next generation of leaders. It will yield strong families and strong communities. Indeed, parents taking an active role in their child education produce a willingness in children to learn. California Public University Systems

Dear Governor Jerry Brown and the lawmakers in Sacramento,

I am a community-college student who is studying arduously to achieve my career aspiration through transferring to a 4-year university for getting a higher educational degree. In three years ago, I moved from Hong Kong to San Francisco, California, its purpose is to continuing my education under a better quality educational environment. In fact, I heard some bad news about the cuts to higher education in this last couple of years, that will cut off the amount of registered students and classes, the services on the campuses, and the overall quality of education. This seems a terrible illusion that is distorting my career dream indirectly.
Honestly, under increasing schooling fee already made me difficulty to continue my higher education, even though I can understand about the financial risk in California. But now, there are many decisions of changing California's post-secondary education system. When the class sizes are changed larger, the class instructors will have more students to teach and help. Hence, they might not handle that much, and it affects their quality teaching for us. When the essential services have been cut off, it makes me losing a quiet studying area in the library and also losing helpers who help me achieving my transferring goal as counselors, teachers, tutors from tutorial center, etc. It entirely decreases my valuable opportunity to complete my higher education.
Please cautiously consider this important decisions about California public university systems again.
Thank you!

Sincerely,
Wing Yan Chung (Natalie)

The Right to Education

Education is generally of preparing people intellectually for mature life and developing the power of judgment. All people have a right to a quality education taught by qualified teachers. But what is the definition of a "quality" education? Does everyone think that a "quality" education should be taught by qualified teachers? In some undeveloped countries, people may think their "quality" education is only studying in some simple knowledge by someone who can teach. In Africa, people may think that could learning something is already their definition of a "quality" education. This education is better than hunting skills. They have their right to be educate either something besides hunting or hunting skills. In addition, people in Hong Kong will think that a quality education taught by qualified teachers, but there are not many qualified teachers in my opinion. Therefore, many of them think American education is their quality education. Hence, some of them chose to move out from their own country. Definitely, all people have their right to choose their "quality" education everywhere.

For exception, when the countries have no money to pay good qualified teachers, it will low down the quality of education and low the schooling test scores. Urban inner city schools should deal with this through training the rest of teachers well professionally. Hoping that those trained teachers should pass teaching tests to become qualified teachers. Then they can teach and create some good students to be tested with good scores. This is the only way to deal with this low financial situation which affects the quality of education, and also keeping the reputation of quality education.

Introduction of ME

Hi, everyone!! :)

My name is Natalie Chung, and I also have a Chinese name Wing Yan, which is because I am an Asian who moved from Hong Kong three years ago for continuing my education with a better study environment. Last year, I graduated from Mills High School here and applied to Foothill College successfully. I enjoy my life in America.
Furthermore, this is my second blog on this blogger.com free website. Both of them are for school homework assignments. I had fun while posting blogs weekly, and it can easily earn a part of points from this English 110 class and pass the class to achieve my dream which is to become an interior designer and help people decorating the insides of houses as my career aspiration. Therefore, my major is interior design for now on.

In this spring quarter, I would like to improve my writing skills - writing faster with correct grammars and adequate vocabularies words in English 110 class, and also improve my reading speed as well. Fortunately, posting blogs as free writing weekly are good for practicing writing faster from writing more. After that, we will read others' blogs to give them comments for feeds back, that can improve my reading speed from reading more about interesting blogs. I like to share things on blogs for my little expressions.
